People with mental illnesses, including anxiety and depression, are more likely to die early, according to a study that appears in the British Medical Journal.

Researchers studied 68,000 cases of premature deaths from conditions, including heart disease and cancer, over a 10-year span.

They found low-level mental distress raised a person's premature death risk by 16 percent. Serious mental illness raised the risk by 67 percent.

The study is the largest of its kind to show a correlation between psychological distress and death.
