1 adult, 5 minors charged after Schaumburg standoff

August 17, 2012 (SCHAUMBURG, Ill.)

John Christopher Martel, whose 22nd birthday was Wednesday, was charged with one misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct and one misdemeanor count of unlawfully permitting a minor to become intoxicated.

Five minors were charged with underage drinking.

Police say they began investigating "suspicious subjects" in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2200-block of Pennview Lane just before 2 a.m. Thursday when the officer saw three people leave a nearby building and start running, a Schaumburg police news release said.

Police say they followed the people running to an apartment, where they say they heard a female screaming for help. Police say a man was heard telling the girl to sit down and be quiet. Police tried but failed to get into the apartment.

The Schaumburg Fire Department was also called and brought in breaching tools. But crews could still not get in. Police say they later learned the people in the apartment had wedged several couches into the steel doorway.

Police say as they continued to attempt to enter the apartment, they heard someone inside say someone was dead.

An Emergency Services Team eventually forced their way in and took 18 people into custody. A 19th person was transported to a local hospital for a medical condition not related to the police activity. That person was treated and released from the hospital and returned to the Schaumburg police station. No one from the apartment wanted to press charges against anyone else in the apartment.
