Study: Dementia resistance may be genetic

August 17, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Researchers report in the journal Neurology that some families may have built-in protection from developing the disease.

High levels of a protein called CRP, or C-reactive protein, may be the source of that defense.

Researchers conclude that elderly people with elevated levels of the protein and no signs of the dementia must be resistant to dementia.

More research is underway.
