According to authorities, one person was killed, and two people were injured critically and airlifted to area hospitals.
All northbound lanes remained closed hours later while investigators reconstruct the accident, which occurred around 7 a.m.
Near the same time, an unrelated six-vehicle crash occurred in the southbound lanes. No major injuries were reported in that crash.
Another two-vehicle accident happened in the southbound lanes, as well, also with no major injuries.
Indiana state police say visibility was greatly reduced Saturday morning due to a large amount of smoke in the area and possibly dense fog.
Although the investigation continues, the weather is preliminarily being considered the cause of the accidents.
