Drought improves red wine quality

August 18, 2012

The trade group Wine America says the lack of moisture actually improves the quality of the grapes harvested in areas affected by the drought.

They say it makes the grapes smaller but with a better sugar concentration. Too much rain dilutes the sugar.

The news is not all good however. The benefits of dry conditions to the grapes are short term.

A prolonged drought can damage the vines and hurt future harvests.
