Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel says his administration is containing the high levels of violence that have plagued the city.

"We put more police on the street, getting kids, guns and drugs off the street, our crime rate is down 10 percent and our shootings have declined from what was basically, we lost the early part of the first quarter of the year and we've brought them down dramatically," he said on NBC's Meet the Press.

The murder rate is up by nearly a third from last year.

But the mayor says that's largely because of gang on gang incidents.

The mayor says overall crime is down and there's an effort on to reduce the gang issues.
