One in three Americans have high blood pressure and only half of them have it under control, according to a new study that also says that dramatically increases their risk for possible fatal heart attacks and strokes.

The numbers, according to the study in Morbidity and Mortality, translates to 67 million Americans, and only 36 million keeping it at healthy levels through medication or other means.

The study says patients help themselves by taking medication, cutting down on sodium, and eating a healthy diet and exercising, but doctors, healthcare providers, and pharmacists have a role to play too.
