Study: Shy preschoolers may face tough road academically

September 7, 2012

A new study finds preschoolers who are extremely socially reserved and withdrawn may be at risk for falling behind in math and reading when they start kindergarten.

The research suggests that feeling withdrawn may trigger a cascade of learning problems in the preschooler. That's because the child may fall into the background in the classroom.

Authors of the study in the Journal of School Psychology say both parents and teachers should be mindful of this and make sure the children get the attention they need.
