Vitamin D during pregnancy may be critical for the brain development of fetuses. According to a study in Pediatrics, a deficiency in Vitamin D could impede a child's mental and motor skills.

Spanish researchers measured the level of Vitamin D in the blood of almost 2,000 women during their pregnancy. They then evaluated the mental and motor abilities of their babies at age 14-months.

They found children of Vitamin D deficient mothers scored lower than those whose mothers had adequate levels of the sunshine vitamin.

Experts still debate how much Vitamin D pregnant women should receive.
