Free WiFi in Millennium Park; mayor promises WiFi in every city park

September 24, 2012 (CHICAGO)

This is the start of a program that the mayor says will allow free WiFi in every park in the city. It's being called the "Chicago Broadband Challenge."

The mayor says building a network to allow high-speed Internet service will be done in conjunction with other infrastructure upgrades already under way.

"It's a unique opportunity to lay the broadband and dark fiber throughout the city, and no other city has that capacity because .we are doing what no other city is doing which is the largest water infrastructure investment," said Emanuel.

The mayor says project officials will seek input and information from the public as well as the business community.
