Durbin wants the Food and Drug Administration to fix loopholes that allow the makers of the drinks to sell products with stimulants and high levels of caffeine. He says they have not been proven safe.
The FDA revealed this week that it is investigating reports of five deaths and one non-fatal heart attack, involving people who had just consumed Monster brand energy drinks.
A spokesperson for Monster beverage had no comment.
