After an extremely violent summer, Chicago's murder rate is on its way down.

Chicago police announced Thursday that the number of murders fell from 44 in October 2011 to 36 in October 2012, the second lowest rate since 1982.

There were also 23 fewer shootings in October 2012 than in October 2011.

However, the murder rate for 2012 is very high. The total number of murders so far has surpassed the number of murders in all of 2011.
