Turkey giveaway tries to meet growing need

November 17, 2012 (CHICAGO)

Alderman Emma Mitts of the 37th Ward, along with a team of volunteers and local businesses, gave away thanksgiving turkeys to more than 1,300 families at McNair Elementary School.

The alderman says she and her organization have tried to meet the growing need in her ward for help during the holiday season.

"The calls are overwhelming," she said. "The staff gets overwhelmed, but I think the good outweighs the bad. It's better to give than to receive. And I ask them to not only take this turkey, but see if they can be a blessing to another maybe be sharing a portion of what they have."

This is the 12th consecutive year Alderman Mitts' group has done the turkey giveaway.
