People living longer, dealing with more health problems

December 13, 2012

What researchers are seeing here in the United States apparently is the same health scene playing out around the globe.

Nearly everywhere around the world, people are living longer, but they are dealing with health problems causing years of pain, disability and mental distress.

That's the conclusion of a five-year study considered the most comprehensive of global health in the history of medicine.

The Global Burden of Disease Study is being published in The Lancet medical journal.

Among the findings is that while malnutrition has dropped, the dangerous effects of excessive eating are taking its place.

Smoking and alcohol use have also overtaken child hunger to become the second- and third-leading health risks behind high blood pressure.
