Quinn encourages Illinoisans to help military members

December 23, 2012

He called on residents to donate their frequent flier miles to "Operation Hero Miles."

The program is administered by the Fisher House Foundation and flies military families to service members receiving medical treatment.

"Their loved ones, often times of modest means, cannot get to their bedside," Quinn said. "Whether it's Germany, or Bethesda Maryland or San Antonio Texas Brook Army Medical Center or anywhere else."

"Operation Hero Miles" also flies home wounded or ill service members for free.

The program has issued more than 34,000 tickets which saved military families nearly $55 million in airfare costs, according to officials.
