Illinois U.S. Senator Mark Kirk plans to retire from the naval reserves after a 23 year military career.

On Thursday, Kirk resumed his duties in the senate nearly a year after suffering a stroke.

A spokesperson for the senator tells ABC7s partner, The Daily Herald, that Kirk will wind down his military career and retire.

He first joined the reserves in 1989 when he was a congressional aide.
