Authorities: Chicago police fatally shoot man in South Shore

January 7, 2013 (CHICAGO)

It happened near 75th and Jeffery Monday afternoon. The man was driving a gray Dodge Charger that fit the description of a vehicle that had been stolen in an armed carjacking, police said.

Officers approached the vehicle as it sat in traffic, they say.

"All of the sudden he comes out with a black object in his right hand and he starts running," Fraternal Order of Police spokesperson Pat Camden said. "The officers give chase. He turns with the object. The officers, fearing it was a gun, in fear of their lives, one officer opens fire. The offender's hit."

The police union says it turns out the object was not a gun. Officials confirmed a gun was not recovered from the scene.

The Independent Police Review Authority will investigate the shooting, police said. It is standard procedure in any police shooting.
