If you keep lighting up cigarettes, at least a decade of your life goes up in smoke, according to a new study.

However quitting smoking before the age of 40 reduces the risk of death associated with continued smoking by 90-percent, according to the latest calculation in the "New England Journal of Medicine".

Women have apparently caught up with men for the risk of dying from smoking-related illnesses.

Women who smoke now have a much greater risk of dying from lung cancer than they did decades ago.

Researchers said it's partly because they are starting younger and smoking more.
