First-ever guidelines for kids with type 2 diabetes

January 28, 2013

Commonly known as adult onset diabetes, experts say .as many as one in three children are now diagnosed with type 2, due largely to the rise in childhood obesity. That's why, for the first time ever, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued guidelines for the management of this condition in children and teenagers ages 10 to 18.

The group says pediatricians and endocrinologists are used to dealing with type 1 but most have had no formal training in the care of children with type 2 diabetes.

Among the guidelines, once a child has been diagnosed, prescribe insulin and lifestyle changes immediately until the exact type of diabetes can be determined.
