High doses of popular cholesterol lowering drugs called statins could be linked to kidney problems.

The findings in the British Medical Journal reveal patients who took high doses ranging from 10 to 40 milligrams or more were 34% more likely to be hospitalized for acute kidney injury during the first 120 days of treatment.

The risk remained elevated two years after starting treatment. What's a patient to do? Experts say the best advice if you're concerned about statin's is to discuss with your doctor before jumping to any conclusions.
