Several dozen parents and members of a South Side community gathered to protest against the closure of Overton Elementary School on East 49th Street.

They marched from Overton to the new welcoming school, Mollision Elementary School near 44th and King. Protesters say the closures will destabilize their community and could lead to more violence.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Barbara Byrd Bennett released a statement in part saying, "We can no longer accept a broken status quo that is keeping our students trapped in under-resourced and underutilized schools where they are not receiving the quality education they need to thrive."
