Volunteers finish South Side school playground in 1 day

May 23, 2013 (CHICAGO)

Volunteers from Disney, the parent company of ABC7 Chicago, have partnered with KaBOOM! to build a playground at Tonti Elementary School on Chicago's Southwest Side in a single day.

Kids, parents, teachers, and the community came together to build a playground for the grade school's 1,000 students. The effort – and the playground design- is the result of an idea kids had three years ago.

They'd raised $8,500 for the project. Non for profit KaBOOM! is helping to coordinate the project, which is made possible with the help of corporate contributor Disney.

Val Warner and Ji Suk Yi from Windy City Live were among the company staffers volunteering.

The new playground's design is based on drawings created by the students themselves. It will take more than 200 volunteers a few hours to put this together.
