Police say the victim, 18-year-old Dionte Maxwell, was shot in the chest.
The shooting happened shortly before 11 p.m. Friday on the 8400 block of South Constance Avenue. Witnesses say the gunfire was part of an apparent altercation at a birthday party.
"(It was) a little intimate party, some neighborhood people came by and was asked to leave," said a witness identified only as Monique. "An altercation broke out and pulled out a gun and shot, shot him dead."
Family friends say Maxwell was a college freshman. There are no suspects in custody.
