The safety issue was found in 240 rail cars that are currently being used on the Green, Pink and Red line trains. The CTA says the cars will remain in service because passenger safety is not threatened.
The missing welds were discovered last month by the manufacturer of the rail cars.
Repairs will begin this weekend and run through October.
