String of Woodlawn child luring incidents reported

June 10, 2013 (CHICAGO)

There has been a series of incidents in the city's Woodlawn community, the most recent was Thursday. Police are warning residents to be alert.

Residents in the South Side neighborhood remain on alert after police warn of a man trying to lure school aged children to come with him.

The most recent incident happened in the 6200-block of South Drexel. There've been three other attempts in the same area dating back to April 1.

In a community alert issued by detectives at the 3rd District - victims say they were approached by a stranger who offers them candy and blows kisses to convince them to come to him.

The offender is described as a black man, 20-30 years old with a dark complexion and brown eyes who has dreadlocks with gold tips.

It's believed he sometimes uses a red Montana van and white four-door vehicle with missing center wheel caps.

As police have beefed up patrols in the area, some still worry about the safety of the community's children.

"I think we all need to pitch in and tell, don't be afraid, just say something," said neighbor Angela Payne.
