President Obama honors two Chicago-connected artists with humanities medals

Two artists with Chicago connections were honored Wednesday at the White House.

President Obama presented soprano Renee Fleming with a National Humanities Medal.

Fleming is a creative consultant for the Lyric Opera.

Filmmaker George Lucas also received a medal. He recently married Chicagoan Mellody Hobson, the president of Ariel Investments.

A total of 23 people received National Humanities Medals for their contributions to the arts and humanities.
