ESPN announced Wednesday that Austin, Texas, has been selected as the next North American host city for the X Games, for four years beginning in 2014. The primary site will be the Circuit of the Americas sports and entertainment complex, which opened last November by hosting the Formula One U.S. Grand Prix.
Austin was chosen over three other finalists: Chicago, Detroit and Charlotte, N.C.
The X Games will wrap up an 11-year run in Los Angeles with this summer's event Aug. 1-4. It will be the last of six X Games events this year.
The first X Games in Austin will be next May 15-18.
"We believe Chicago is an ideal host for world-class sporting events, competitive with any city in the world, and this process reflected that. We congratulate Austin; in Chicago we'll continue to aggressively pursue top-level sporting events at every opportunity, to attract visitors and economic activity to the city," said Sam Stark, executive director, Chicago Sports Commission.
