S.S. Eastland cruise ship disaster remembered on 98th anniversary

July 24, 2013 (CHICAGO)

On this date in 1915, the cruise ship Eastland rolled over on its side at its dock on the Chicago River.

Eight hundred and fifty people were killed.

On each anniversary the Eastland Historical Society holds a ceremony to honor those who died.

Following the tribute, the Coast Guard dropped a bouquet of flowers into the river at the site of the tragedy.
