CPS Safe Passage route murder suspect Lamont Grant charged in shooting death of Ralph McNeal

August 14, 2013 (CHICAGO)

The victim, Ralph McNeal, 54, was killed Saturday evening in the South Side Dearborn Homes neighborhood. It happened in the 2900-block of South State Street, which CPS designated as a safe route for students to walk to and from school.

The Safe Passage sign that was posted made no difference to the gunman. McNeal was sitting with friends when a gunman started shooting.

McNeal's friends told ABC7 Chicago he got caught in a crossfire when he got between someone else involved in a quarrel over a woman.

McNeal was shot in the back and died at Stroger hospital. A 26-year-old man also was shot but survived.

Witnesses say the gunman got into a waiting car that sped away.

Early Wednesday, Chicago Pastor Corey Brooks of New Beginnings Church tweeted a photo of himself praying with a man who apparently turned himself in to police that same morning.

Brooks wrote on his Twitter feed, "Tonight a young man who shot two people and killed one allowed me to turn him into the police."

Chicago police said they were questioning that person at police headquarters.

ABC7 Chicago has not been able to reach Pastor Brooks for further comment.

Chicago police have not filed charges yet.
