One of those babies was Zachary Lucas Johnson. He was abandoned in the trash by a 13-year-old girl in Country Club Hills last year. He died before police found him.
The other babies were unclaimed by parents who would not or could not arrange for them to be buried. A group called Rest In His Arms arranged the service. They point out that Illinois does have a safe haven law.
Under that law, a healthy newborn, 30 days old or younger, can be left at a designated safe haven with no questions asked. Safe havens include all hospitals, emergency medical facilities and fire and police stations.
