Surgeon honored at Chicago gala; Dr. Donald Liu died while rescuing 2 children from Lake Michigan

A surgeon who died while rescuing two children from Lake Michigan was honored Saturday night in Chicago.

Doctor Donald Liu was recognized at the Celebration of Hope dinner hosted by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America.

He was a surgeon at Comer Children's Hospital. Chloe Kennebeck of Glen Ellyn was honored as the inspirational youth.

ABC7 Eyewitness News reporter Ben Bradley was the emcee for the gala.
