FCC wants sold smartphones easier to unlock

The government wants cell phone carriers to make it easier to unlock the smartphones they sell.

Consumers often purchase phones at heavy discounts as part of a contract.

But when the contract ends, customers who want to switch to another carrier often find their phones are locked.

Now the head of the Federal Communications Commission is calling on the wireless industry to change that practice or face tougher regulations.
