December 9, 2013 (HAMMOND, Ind.) --
A new bridge has opened in northwest Indiana linking the cities of Hammond and East Chicago.Traffic began moving Monday on the so-called Nine Span Bridge.
The new bridge replaces the old structure that had been there since 1930 and features higher clearance for a possible rail yard development below.
It is expected to carry 20,000 cars and trucks a day between Hammond and East Chicago.
