Morkes Chocolates creates Christmas ornament caramel apples

December 11, 2013 (PALATINE, Ill.)

Morkes Chocolates in Algonquin and Palatine is famous for their many chocolate creations. They specialize in taking that divine confection and turning it into even greater sweetness, and this year they have taken the candy apple to chocoholic heaven.

"We're making Christmas ornament caramel apples. (Ornaments?) We design them to look like Christmas ornaments," said Rhonda Dehn, owner, Morkes Chocolates.

Yes, Christmas ornament edible apples pretty enough to help decorate your home. This is nothing new for Morkes Chocolates. They started on Chicago's Southwest Side 93 years ago.

Bill Morkes was the founder, and now his granddaughter Rhonda Dehn runs the operation and she knows how to improve on Mother Nature's apples.

"Dip it in caramel. (Caramel?) Caramel. Made from scratch. (And then?) Dip it in chocolate. Either milk or dark chocolate or white chocolate. (It just keeps getting better and better.) It keeps getting better. (And then the artistry?) And then the magic. We call it magic," said Dehn.

And this is it, the magic. The Christmas ornament caramel apple. And you have to wonder: How did they come up with the idea for this?

"It came from a customer who asked us to make a disco caramel apple. (A disco ball?) A disco ball, yes, out of a caramel apple. That didn't work but from that we came up with the caramel apple, the ornament caramel apples," said Dehn.

The caramel and chocolate apples are finished with some powdered sugar glaze and squiggles for texture and design. Then sprinkles are added for the finishing touch. They say they last about two weeks.

The cost is $9.95. The taste? Priceless.
