United Airlines to lay off 685 flight attendants

Chicago-based United Airlines will lay off hundreds of flight attendants.

The airline says not enough people accepted the company's offer for voluntary part-time jobs and furloughs, so there will be involuntary furloughs for 685 flight attendants.

It's part of a plan to cut $2 billion a year from the airline's budget.

The move is part of the ongoing consolidation since United and Continental merged almost three years ago.
