The price of a bowl of split pea or vegetable barley soup at the café changes with the weather - literally. Mather's is charging people according to that day's temperature. That means if it's one-degree outside, that soup's gonna cost your 1 cent. On Monday, people looking to warm-up with a steaming bowl of soup also cleaned-up when it comes to a free lunch, and then some.
"If it's 5 below, it's negative five," Lori Keenan said of the price of soup. "Each person who ordered the soup got a nickel."
The promotion, which runs through February 28, is popular. According to Mather's about 25-percent of the customers give the nickel back, and one jokester wanted to order 1,000 bowls.
The normal price for a bowl of soup: $1.99.
