Amtrak train strikes vehicle in Riverside; Metra BNSF trains delayed

February 20, 2014 (RIVERSIDE, Ill.)

Amtrak says that Train 5, the California Zephyr, made contact with a vehicle obstructing the tracks. Riverside police say the driver was in heavy traffic, moving over the tracks when a train came into view. The lights and gates activated and the driver behind her backed up to give her space. She was able to partially back up off the tracks and the Amtrak train hit the front end of the car.

The driver was taken to MacNeal Hospital. Her condition is not yet known.

Metra says that BNSF trains are now moving around the Amtrak train on a single track.

Amtrak's California Zephyr operates daily between the San Francisco Bay and Chicago on tracks owned, maintained and dispatched by BNSF Railway Co. Amtrak said no one aboard the train was injured.
