Uber adds iPhone notifications for surge pricing

March 5, 2014 (CHICAGO)

Last month, the ABC7 I-Team investigated the sticker shock of surge pricing on Uber black cars and Uber X rides. That's when riders can be charged three, four or five times the normal rate during snow, cold or other peak times.

One woman paid almost $280 in a black car from River North to O'Hare.

Uber says starting Wednesday, Uber customers in the Chicago area can request push alerts, telling them when surge pricing ends.

A Midwest regional manager says this will help smooth out the demand and help customers with flexibility, save money.

This new feature is for iPhone users as of now, there's no word on when Android users will have the feature.
