A Seattle-area baby was rescued from a car after about eight hours alone.

King County Sheriff's Office transit police officers used special equipment to unlock a car in a Thornton Place garage shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday. Deputies said a caller had noticed a car with an infant sitting in a car seat had been parked in the garage since 10 a.m.

The distraught mother was speechless. Police said Matt Steele, who identified himself as the baby girl's father, left the infant in the car after dropping his other kids off at daycare Thursday morning.

His wife realized what had happed after she picked up the older kids this evening and the baby wasn't there.

"I don't have an explanation for that," Steele said.

Steele could barely speak as well but said the baby was OK. Police questioned him.

"They're not arresting me. Um, I guess you should ask them," Steele said to a TV crew.

Police said the investigation could lead to possible child neglect charges or child services involvement. Steele left the scene quickly. He said he had to go pick up his other daughter.
