The rockhopper penguin's gender had not been determined until recent genetic tests were performed on the chick, the aquarium said in a release.
Shedd's penguins have started gathering materials to make nests for breeding season. Since 1994, the annual nesting activities have been part of the successful penguin breeding program at Shedd.
