The 15-year old was sitting on the metal grate outside the Flossmoor Public Library when he fell through it.
The vent vault is about 20 feet deep and it took firefighters about 40 minutes to rescue him.
The teen was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
It's not known how he fell through the grate.
