South Shore shooting injures 2 young children, woman near 78th, Kingston

Neighbors say a grandmother with her two grandsons when they were shot near 78th and Kingston in the South Shore neighborhood. Neighbors said they heard several gunshots around 8:45 on Tuesday night while the three were walking together on the street.

All three remain hospitalized but are stable. The woman, in her 50s, was shot in the leg. A three-year-old boy was shot in his shoulder and is in good condition. A five-year-old boy was most seriously injured. He was shot in the stomach and is in "guarded" condition at Comer Children's Hospital.

"Well, I was in the kitchen and right at the back window, there's the alley, and all you heard was consistent, like 5 or 6 shots, like back to back," said Quenica Thornton, resident.

"I'll give Chicago police credit. This time was the fastest response time I've ever seen, and I've lived over here two years," said Rayumos Hope, resident.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and no one is in custody.
