Bar video shows man after leaving his 5-year-old granddaughter in desert

PHOENIX (WLS) -- Surveillance video from an Arizona bar shows a man hanging out after he left his 5-year-old granddaughter alone in the desert with a loaded gun.

Paul Rater, 62, told deputies in November his truck got stuck and he went for help. The video shows the man hanging out at the bar for 30 minutes before calling 911.

New recordings of his exchange with deputies have also been released.

Rater, who faces child abuse and neglect charges, told deputies: "We started walking and a mile into it, she's cryin' and she didn't want to walk. I said, well you stay here, here's my gun. if any bad guys come, shoot 'em."

Deputy: "A 5 year old, lost out in the desert, that's pretty much potentially death."

Rater: "I actually know that."

The girl was returned safely to her family.
