Tips for car care, saving on repairs
Tire blowouts and excess heat are key factors in summer car accidents.

Shari Pheasant, author of "25 Car Care Tips for Women," spoke to ABC7 about some helpful advice when looking for a great auto service shop.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that August has the second highest number of fatal car accidents, and, June, July, and September each have high numbers of accidents. "Tire blowouts and excess heat" are key factors in summer car accidents. Many people are not taking their car in for a state of health check, thinking they can avoid repairs this way. However, this causes more things to go wrong.

Mistakes to avoid when looking for a great auto service shop:

1. To call and ask for a quote

2. Going to a dealer for repairs

3. Thinking your solution should be easy

Pheasant said car owners should take the vehicle in to be serviced three times per year minimum, which could save owners $30,000 over the lifetime of owning their car.
