Firefighters responded before 9:30 a.m. to a three-story building in the 1800-block of North Kimball Avenue in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood. When crews arrived, two of the three floors were on fire.

Chopper 7HD was over the scene around 9:45 a.m. Black and white smoke billowed out of the building and firefighters were on the roof.

Three people were rescued from the building where the fire started. One of those people, a man in his mid-30s, was transported in critical condition to Presence St. Mary Medical Center and transferred to Stroger Hospital. The two others refused treatment.

The flames spread to two other buildings by around 10 a.m. and the fire was upgraded from two to three alarms. Officials said the third alarm called more crews to the scene so that firefighters could rotate and get relief from the heat.

Three firefighters suffered heat-related injuries. They were also taken to St. Mary. All have been released as of Wednesday night.

The fire was struck around 10:30 a.m. Two of the buildings were heavily damaged. The roof of one of the buildings was also damaged.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. CFD said some residents lost pets in the fire.
