Boy, 14, fatally shot on West Side while helping father move

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The family of a 14-year-old honor student who was shot while helping his father move out of an apartment on Chicago's West Side pleaded with the public on Tuesday.

No arrests were made in the shooting. The boy's family gathered outside a West Side police station to call on the community to come forward with information.

Demarco Webster Jr., an 8th grader at Jensen Elementary Scholastic Academy, was shot at about 1 a.m. Saturday as he was helping his father tie a bed to a van. He was one of 17 people fatally shot this weekend. October was the second-deadliest month this year for Chicago gun violence.

"You have no idea of what you have done to me," Demarco Webster Sr. said of the shooter. "I will never be the same again. I saw my son be born and I had to see him die to some stupidity."

The family was moving from the Austin neighborhood.

Demarco Webster Jr. liked to make his family laugh and loved school, especially math and research, his family said.

The shooting occurred in the 500-block of South Central when someone in a dark-colored car shot him in the torso, authorities said.

Webster, who lived in the 700-block of South Kedzie, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 3:15 a.m.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information about the shooting.
