Summer program initiative aims to keep Chicago kids safe

CHICAGO (WLS) -- There's a new initiative to create summer programs to help keep kids safe on Chicago's South Side this summer.

"As we address this crime problem, let's understand that strengthening families, strengthening parents, giving kids the kind of attention they need makes a difference," Sen. Dick Durbin said.

Senator Durbin toured several classrooms at Charles Henderson Elementary School in the West Englewood neighborhood.

The school's partnership with the organization Family Focus was made possible through a 21st Century Learning Center grant.
