Blue Line truffles support Chicago police officers

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A North Side baker is supporting the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation this holiday season with her Blue Line truffles.

Donna Kosiba of the City News Café in Portage Park is donating $2 from each box of Blue Line truffles to the foundation, which helps injured police officers.

"I know it's not going to completely erase things but I hope it will make life a little sweeter," said Kosiba.

Kosiba started with ganache chilled overnight, then rolled it into balls before chilling it again and finally coating it in another layer of hard chocolate. She has made the truffles for the past three years.

Officers and families helped by the foundation are grateful for the help.

In 1988, Chicago Police Officer Bernie Domagala was shot in the head while on duty. He survived, but with a severe brain injury required 24-hour care.

Denise Domagala said it was overwhelming emotionally and financially until the foundation began offering support.

"Even though we may never meet face to face, never be able to give that hug, but they act like we know them. They really made a difference in our hearts," said Denise Domagala.

The truffles are available at the City News Café on the 4000-block of North Cicero Avenue in Portage Park.
