CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Public Schools is laying off 950 employees just weeks before the first day of school.

School officials say this happens every year based on enrollment changes, program adjustments and students' academic needs.

Some of the laid off workers could be called back. CPS says that in previous years 60-percent of laid-off teachers are rehired in full-time positions. An additional 23-percent of teachers find work as substitutes.

CPS officials say this is the fewest number of teacher layoffs since 2007.
