CHICAGO (WLS) -- Demolition started this weekend on a church on South Union in the old Maxwell Street Market area that pre-dates the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

The former Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church was originally built as a German school in 1869.

Although historic, the building was not listed as being architecturally significant in the Chicago Historic Resources Survey.
